Place Nationale
At the heart of Montauban, Place Nationale lines up its double arcades, unique in France, built in forain brick after two major fires in the seventeenth century. You take a terrace seat, sheltered from sun or rain, for a quiet first drink. Shops, antique dealers and the Tuesday and Saturday morning markets add to the charm: a theatrical yet warm backdrop.
The Pont-Vieux and the Tarn
At the edge of the old centre, the Pont-Vieux, built in the fourteenth century, spans the Tarn with its seven brick arches. You enjoy the landscaped banks and watch the town reflected on the water. At the end of the bridge, the Ingres Bourdelle Museum, in the former bishop’s palace, holds drawings and sculptures by the two local sons: a gentle dive into art to share together.
Through the lanes
The Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Cathedral, classical in style with a monumental painting by Ingres, offers a bright pause. Saint-Jacques Church and its medieval tower tell of the Compostela route. You wander Rue de la Résistance or towards the Botanical Garden, the centre’s green lung. On Lyad, Montauban members share their favourite lanes; it is up to you to find someone to extend the walk with.
